What is the wood-cement panel?

What are the advantages for our facade?

What price €/m2?

In this post we explain the wood-cement panel facade.
In case you still do not know us, let us introduce ourselves.
We are ERA architects, one of the young, committed and creative architecture studios in Barcelona.
In this post you can find our simple explanation of the wood-cement panel use for your house facade.

Maybe you’re interested to know that this is the 7th post of a special series named Facades.
We leave you here the previous posts: ‘Facades’‘Ventilated facade’ and ‘Insulating’
In these posts we tell you the reasons to recommend the ventilated facade for your home.
This type of facade is able to have a wide range of finishes as explained in the post: ‘Facade Materials’
One of our favorite materials for the ventilated facade is the wood-cement panel facade. Bellow we tell you why.

What is the wood-cement panel?
It’s a panel formed by a mixture of dry pine wood fibers and dry compressed cement.
Its appearance is not homogeneous and has spots of different shades with great aesthetic and decorative value.

What advantages does it have?

  • Not toxic
It does not contain dangerous volatile compounds and is free of silica, asbestos and formaldehyde.
  • Acoustic isolation
It has good acoustic insulation properties due to its high weight.
The acoustic insulation index varies according to the thickness of the plate. The sound resistance in the air is 31 or 37 dB depending on whether the thickness of the plate is 8 mm or 22 mm, respectively.
  • Weight resistant
The board has a resistance to bending that allows it to be used as a structural element resistant. Therefore, it is used in floors and as a ceiling support.
    The characteristic breaking strength at bending is 10.5 N / mm2 with a modulus of elasticity of 6000 N / mm2.
  • Easy installation
It can be cut, drilled and sanded. The tools and fastening systems used for the Viroc boards are identical to those used with wood.
  • Fire retardant
Prevents the spread of fire. According to the flammability test carried out, it is classified as B-s1, d0 according to EN 13501.
  • Resistant to insects
It will not be degraded by the action of living organisms such as fungi, termites or any other type of insect.
  • Thermal isolation
It has good thermal resistance properties, which means that it can function as insulation in both cold and hot temperatures.
  • Moisture resistant
Under the action of water it is not damaged.
It is a material impervious to water and resistant to water vapor.
  • Color and texture
It offers 4 different colors in different textures.

What’s the price €/m2?

Depending on the color and texture, the price of the bare panel may vary from € 25/m2 (raw grey color) to € 30/m2 (raw white color).

Our professional recommendation:

In our studio of Architecture in Barcelona ERA architects, we recommend:

  • Before installation, the panel to be exposed to site humidity by storing them in a dry place without direct sunlight for 48hr.
  • The panel should be 16mm
  • The fixing must be with screws seen in stainless steel on ventilated facade slabs with 8mm joint
  • This fixing should be done near the edges to avoid deformations due to relative humidity.

Hope this is helpful!

Best of luck on this adventure.
