Project Description
Home renovation Barcelona
This home renovation in Barcelona has low-energy heating & cooling. Also improvements on airleakages and added insulation (on roof, walls and flooring).
This project, designed for a German artist and a Catalan musician, demonstrates the potential of mezzanine additions, blending aesthetics with functionality. The project not only adds an extra bedroom for guests but also creates diverse environments tailored for the artistic and musical pursuits of the household.

One of the primary objectives of the project was to create an additional bedroom for guests, particularly for those visiting from Germany.

The mezzanine’s design cleverly utilizes the apartment’s high ceilings to create a double-height space, fostering an environment that inspires creativity. This area is divided into zones for different activities, allowing both adults and children to engage in their artistic pursuits simultaneously: for artist adoults and artist children.

In addition to its visual appeal, the staircase offers practical storage solutions. The built-in shelving units are designed to hold art supplies, musical instruments, and other creative tools, keeping the living space organized and clutter-free. These shelves also serve as drying racks for the artist’s works, ensuring that each piece is stored safely while it dries.

Thinking about adding a mezzanine?
Here you’ll find 6 pros&cons:
Mezzanine Pros&Cons
The new guest bedroom, perched above the main living space, offers privacy and comfort for visitors. It’s designed with a minimalist aesthetic, adding natural materials and soft colors to create a serene and inviting atmosphere. Large windows ensure that the space is filled with natural light, enhancing the sense of openness.

One of the key aspects of the design is the strategic use of natural light and ventilation. Large windows ensure that the mezzanine and the lower levels are bathed in natural light throughout the day. This not only reduces the need for artificial lighting but also creates a bright and uplifting environment.

Sustainability is at the core of ERA Architects’ philosophy. The materials chosen for this project are eco-friendly, and the design incorporates energy-efficient solutions, such as LED lighting and advanced insulation, to reduce the apartment’s carbon footprint. This commitment to sustainability ensures that the apartment is not only beautiful and functional but also environmentally responsible.

No detail was overlooked in the creation of this mezzanine apartment. From the furnishings to the custom-designed storage solutions, every element was chosen to enhance the living experience of the German artist and Catalan musician.

For the Catalan musician, ERA Architects designed an intimate, acoustically optimized area beneath the mezzanine. This lower space provides a cozy and private environment, perfect for composing and practicing music. The use of sound-absorbing materials and strategic placement of furniture ensures that the musician can work without disturbing the rest of the household.

This design is a testament to the potential of mezzanine additions to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of living spaces. By carefully considering the needs and lifestyle of the residents, ERA Architects have created a home that is both practical and inspiring, blending the old-world charm of Barcelona with modern design principles. This project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful design can transform a living space into a work of art.
