{"id":7616,"date":"2022-06-07T10:55:46","date_gmt":"2022-06-07T08:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/era.archi\/?p=7616"},"modified":"2023-02-07T20:10:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T19:10:25","slug":"why-are-windows-important-in-a-positive-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/era.archi\/en\/why-are-windows-important-in-a-positive-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are windows important in a positive house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"entry-title fusion-post-title fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"18\" data-lineheight=\"27px\">Why are windows important in a positive house?<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p>Two reasons window are important in a positive house.<\/p>\n<p>The basics of windows in a positive house<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>May you don\u2019t know us yet, let\u2019s have a quick introduction: we are ERA architects.<br \/>\nActually, I am Esther Rovira, architect and passive house designer in Barcelona, Catalonia and Andorra for either passive houses, efficient houses and positive houses.<br \/>\nIn this post\u00a0<em>\u2018Aerothermal with underfloor heating or fan coils?\u2019<\/em>, You will find our professional recommendation.<br \/>\nI hope it helps you!<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p>The 5th must of a positive house is to avoid thermal bridges.<br \/>\nMay you&#8217;ve skipped the first four, feel free to check our post: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/era.archi\/en\/6-musts-for-a-positive-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;6 musts for a positive house&#8217;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are windows important in a positive house?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windows in a passive house are very important for two reasons.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, <\/span>they are part of\u00a0 the\u00a0thermal enclosure of your positive house.<br \/>\nSecond (and also very important),\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they capture the sun&#8217;s heat in winter but also repel the extra heat in summer. This is done thanks to special glazing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Window as thermal enclosure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you may already know, all parts of your house thermal enclosure needs to be: insulated, free of thermal bridges and airtight.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, those windows as part of your thermal enclosure MUST also comply those three standards in all its parts.<br \/>\nThis means frames but also glazing need to comply with all the three must-haves.<br \/>\nSince this is too much information to digest for a blog post, I&#8217;ll break it down into two other posts:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/era.archi\/en\/window-frame-in-a-positive-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FRAMES in a positive house<\/a><\/strong><\/em> <\/span>(how they achieve insulation, free thermal bridging and airtightness)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/era.archi\/en\/glazing-in-positive-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GLAZING in a positive house<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span> (how they achieve insulation and airtightness)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Special glazing taking the best of Sun&#8217;s energy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we dig into glazing, let\u2019s do a brief description of how the Sun\u2019s energy works.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sun has different types of energy called the solar spectrum.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of: UV light, visible light and infrared light.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these energies are beneficial, some aren\u2019t and need to be regulated depending on your house location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the glazing does three things with the Sun\u2019s energy: transmit, absorb and reflect.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the climate of your location, the glass needs to be designed to have the perfect balance between these transmissions and reflections so it captures enough sun\u2019s energy in winter while repels enough heat in summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me explain it in another way.<br \/>\nWindows glasses capture the sun&#8217;s heat. This is good in winter, but terrible in summer if you live in a warm or temperate climate. Then how to deal with this?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is done with a solar protection layer applied on the glass when it\u2019s being manufactured (coating).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However this solar protection layer also has an effect during winter (not allowing all sun\u2019s heat to go inside).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the architect needs to take the passive simulator requirements, in order to design the glazing in a perfect balance to deliver enough sun heat during winter and enough sun protection during summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you need to know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s forget all those technicalities.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only thing you need to retain is that your architect needs to design the glass combination that matches the passive simulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cannot give you a list of values that work in Spain in each type of climate.<br \/>\nThe reason is that every house design is unique with different surfaces, volume, square meters of windows, oriented differently, with different surrounding shadings. And all in different climate conditions.<br \/>\nSo you really need to ask your architect to give you that value.<br \/>\nAnd she needs to do it by using the combination of the passive house simulator and the glass design simulator before paying the builder the glasses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our professional recommendation:<br \/>\n<\/strong>If your house is to be build in Spain, you need to know this.<br \/>\nArchitecture universities in Spain don\u2019t teach how to design glazing (at least not in 2022). So you need to consider an architect that also has a Passive House designer degree.<br \/>\nThis is not a trick to hire us.
